The Integration Course at a Glance
The general integration course combines intensive German language learning with important information about life in Germany.
How Is the Integration Course Structured?
The general integration course consists of a language course followed by an orientation course.
Language Course
In the language course, you learn and improve your German. You practise vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing for typical situations in everyday and professional life.

Orientation Course
In the orientation course, you learn about Germany's legal system, history, culture, values, rights and responsibilities as well as social life in Germany.

The general integration course comprises 700 teaching units in total: 600 units of language training and 100 units of orientation training.
German for Everyday Life
In the integration course, you learn German through situations that you regularly encounter in everyday life.
Everyday Life & Housing
Learn how to communicate when shopping, looking for accommodation and in many other everyday situations.
Work & Career
Learn important vocabulary for the workplace and practise understanding applications and professional conversations.
Health & Public Authorities
Practise German for medical appointments, forms, appointments and communication with public authorities.
Placement Before the Course Starts
Before you begin your integration course, we carry out a placement test with you.
The result shows your current German language level and helps determine the most suitable course module for you.
How Can I Take Part?
To register, you generally need an entitlement or obligation to participate in an integration course.

New application option since August 2026
Since 1 August 2026, certain groups of people can once again apply for admission to an integration course.
This application option applies in particular to:
- persons with a residence permit according to § 24 AufenthG
- certain German citizens
- certain EU citizens
- certain family members
The application must be submitted in full in order to be processed. Applications are processed by the BAMF after they have been received.
Please note that admission to an integration course also depends on the availability of course places.

Costs and Funding
Depending on your individual situation, participation may be free of charge or a contribution towards the course costs may apply.
Standard Contribution
Participants who are required to contribute currently pay €2.29 per teaching unit. A course section of 100 units therefore costs €229.
Exemption from Course Costs
Under certain conditions, an exemption from the course contribution can be requested pursuant to § 9 para. 2 IntV, for example when receiving certain social benefits or in cases of financial need.
Reimbursement of 50% of Your Contribution
If you successfully complete the integration course within the applicable statutory period and have paid your own contribution, you may apply to BAMF for reimbursement of 50% of the amount paid.
The legal basis is § 9 para. 6 of the Integration Course Ordinance (IntV).
How Does the Integration Course End?
The integration course includes two final tests.
German Test for Immigrants
At the end of the language course, you take the German Test for Immigrants (DTZ). The target level of the general integration course is B1.
Life in Germany
The orientation course ends with the “Life in Germany” test. If you successfully complete both final tests, you receive the “Integration Course Certificate”.
